Dark Skies Awareness

This year is the UN International Year of Astronomy and Blackrock Castle Observatory is taking the opportunity of approaching many different educational, civic and community groups during the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) to propose a number of collaborative programmes and initiatives that would highlight unique partnerships in support of the United Nations cornerstones for IYA2009.

SPECIAL PROJECT March 28, 2009
Earth Hour 8.30pm
www.earthhour.org

The arc of the Milky Way seen from a truly dark site is part of our planet's cultural and natural heritage. It is now more urgent than ever to preserve and protect dark night skies.

How can Earth Hour inspire people to take action on climate change?
For one hour, one night Earth Hour asks the whole world to turn out the lights.

Blackrock Castle Observatory will help promote Earth Hour 2009 in Cork.

Already 538 cities in 75 countries which is double the number of countries that participated in 2008, are committed. With hundreds more cities expected to sign up to switch off in the coming month, Earth Hour 2009 is setting the platform for an unprecedented global mandate for action on climate change.

Other events in March for IYA2009 are the Cork St. Patrick’s Day Parade 2009 themed Cosmic Chaos to celebrate the United Nations International Year of Astronomy and Capture the Cosmos an exhibition of astronomical prints which will hang at Millennium Hall during the Cork St Patrick’s Festival.

Blackrock Castle Observatory will host star counts and observing sessions with telescopes in the courtyard of BCO during the clear sky nights of the week preceding Earth Hour as part of the Globe at Night 2009 from 16-28 March 2009

2008 marked a monumental shift in human history when the number of people living in cities exceeded half the people on Earth. Because of the ambient light of urban landscapes, many city dwellers have never seen a sky full of stars.

Earth Hour will be the highlight celebration of the Globe at Night star count in Orion.

The restaurant will serve by candle light and we will have musical entertainment powered by alternative energy sources.
Local councilors are in support of our efforts to turn off the adjacent street lights.

We would be very pleased to work with the Cork Food Web and associated networks in support of EarthHour and would like to issue a call out to interested bands, alternative energy generators and volunteers to help with the event.
