Let's get it going in Cork

Hi all, we are trying to get together a few Big Lunch events through Cork Food Web. One on the South side is well on the way, we have two possible locations on the Northside in the pipeline... please join this group if you are interested in getting one together in your neighbourhood or helping with someone else's... http://www.thebiglunch.com/

hi nikki
sorry i am only checking this now. yes i'd love to get the article about rooftop gardens off you .I don't think its suitable for the roof of the school becuase of the windows on the side of the roof. I thought becuase it had a flat roof, it would be great to plant a garden there. whats your email address? I'm away until monday, but what about meeting next tuesday maybe?

So talk to you soon, patricia

Hi everyone, wow sounds like the day was a brilliant success, well done to everyone involved. And thanks to the lovely pics sure I feel like I was there myself! I agree with Eimear and feel that we should keep the momentum going.....maybe a monthly meeting like you suggested Eimear. Those of us who didn't manage to get a Big Lunch going (apologies!) can learn from those who did....and maybe we will decide not to wait a whole year before doing something similar again. Thanks for the pesto recipe too Nikki, just waiting now for my nasturtiums to really take off. :)

thanks for your commnet patricia, maybe you want to give me a ring I can explain to you how to put a slide show of images. my number is 086 3743132
basicly you need to add an album in the gallery and then you can copy and paste a code from there and paste here here, or in other web sites like face book.
I have an article about rooftop gardening I can lend it to you,
and would love to come for a visit to hear more about what you're doing in the south pres. maybe we should set a date for next week?

Wow, really nicely put Patricia! Any more pics? Only 1 seems to be coming up...

Does anyone know a Fin Organ? I met him at an event on Friday, he said he had nice pics from Big Lunch up on facebook but I can't find him there...

Hello all
I'm attaching some more great images that was taken by our neighbour Alexa from South Africa, Naomi yours are beautiful, the pictures really do tell a thousand words! Thanks Nicki for that receipe!
Thank- you to Cork Food Web for all your work, collaborations like this are the only way to go. Opposites attract: Sunday was a day where the apple tart met with the apple strudle, coleslaw met couscous, goldgrain biscuit met up with the oaty flapjack, potato salad met with pasta salad, irish tea said hello to herbal tea, and so one. i hope you catch my drift. There was a huge variety. Someone who doesn't live in cork was there said : There was a great sense of unity amongst everyone there".
So many people helped out with this event: - from patsy twomey who went around to every shop and business in town asking if they wanted to participate (aka donate!!), to Eimear and Ameen who spent the whole evening before and morning lifting and dragging chairs and tables, Artlink who spent ages designing and painting the signs, Robert Lee and Lucia Parle for their brilliant workshops, Garreth and Co. for their bicycle and table and chair dragging, Grainne up the road, Eamonn and Co. for making the day- John O'Mahony for the songs, fr. Hurley helped with the marketing by preaching our message from his pulpit, margaret and pat from being brilliant at spreading the word, and lovely quiche and pizza, and Pat for making the tea, Philip Mac for filming the event (we'll have a public screening!!). Sorry for anyone i've missed out on. Collaborative projects like ours ensure that a variety of people are involved, no one is left out, all are welcomed- old and new. I have to say that the sisters here had a ball, and they really deserve a big thank-you, especially to Sr. Anne. I spent a lot of money on printing and posting letters to people, and that is all paid for by Presentation sisters, plus they donated 100 euro in food for the event so that was generous.
Local businesses were really supportive. It makes me think that creating a local currency would be an a great idea, to encourage people to shop locally, and encoruage local businesses to give that extra bit to their valuable customers. What do you think of this?
Anyway i'll attach these photos and let you know about other events that we could organise here. las tbut not least does anyone know anything about roof top gardens?

Thanks nikki! I have to say that was some pesto!! fabulous stuff. Yeah it was great, i just want to keep the vibe going now...lets keep the ideas pot flowing and keep in touch. there was a few suggestions re monthly meetings on a thread naomi started..i put in my 2 cents, might be good to stick a day of the month on it and just get it going as a regular meeting. anyway thanks everyone for attending the meetings we had and all the time spend trying to help each other and pass on info. a success in itself. :D

Congratulations Patricia, Emer, Margaret and everyone involved yesterday was really really special. What an amazing setting, great music, and the pot throwing and tile painting were a lovely extra. It was fantastic to see such a wide range of people from the community all enjoying something together in the open air. I don't imagine there was a soul there who didn't take away something special from the experience.

For the record, here's the nasturtium pesto recipe!:

Lots of nasturtium leaves
Cashew butter
Garlic
Olive oil
Balsamic vinegar (good quality)
Salt & Pepper

All whizzed together with a blender. Afraid I did the quantities freehand but I don't think you could go too far wrong!

The Big Lunch in South Presentation was a great event yesterday. It was very well attended. Great food and music and dancing. Great networking.

One very interesting food item - somebody brought home-made nasturtium pesto. It had a wonderful flavour.

Central to its success was the Cork Food Web Events Section. Very often, local neighbourhood events are only advertised in 'parish' newsletters, or announced from a church pulpit, and most of us don't get to hear about them, even though they might be happening on our doorstops. CFW has changed all that.

I have a contact list for next year's Big Lunch.

Really glad something's come out of it - I'm not aware of any other big lunches - between accidentally booked canoe trips, slow starting off the blocks and no central pilot all the others fell by the wayside :-(

But I'm so glad that South Pres is kind of in my neighbourhood so I'm looking forward to coming down on Sunday and enjoying meeting some neighbours and seeing the fruits of all your planning!
