Were we stand so far.

There has been some interest already, 12 people have signed up. The project has been going on officially at the Hollies since the 14 of March 2010. We can take an unlimited amount of people, as that is what the public liability covers us under (within reason), Children are covered as well.
We have been given long term use of about one third of an acre, this is south facing and well sheltered. We have also sourced seeds and some gardening tools and a big pile of manure that we will make into compost for next autumn. Big thanks to those who have made this possible.
The Hollies have asked, if we could help them by joining in to the work days that they organise (2 days a year). This I passed on to the group and nobody had any objections. There will be 26 days in the year that we will be visiting the garden, we will help the hollies on two of these days. Personally I think it is a good thing to do. There has been a mountain of work done already, well done guys :)
It is also never to late to join in all welcome

We still need:
More participants,
Friendly farmer with some old Hay or straw to give away,
More tools, old tunnel, more seeds maybe,
People to pass on the message. Please tell those you think could help.

We rely on the public, the rich and poor alike to fund this project.

We have also a garden in Cork
Our new garden is in Tir Na Noag/ Simon Community/ Blackrock/ blackrock road/ Cork.
Opposite the Church. Please feel free to come along.

We have so far managed to find a plot at the hollies; it is well sheltered south facing and has good accessibility from the road. We could start right away as it is grass land and does not need clearing. It is in Eniskeen near Dunmanway.

We have been given a heap of farmyard manure, but we would have to collect it. The farmer is going to give me a loan of his mini digger and small car trailer, so I can drop it of.

We have 7 interested people so far. I will broaden my distribution of flyers.

We have been asked by the Hollies, if it is possible to join in one day two times a year in the work parties they organise. This would be then doing things like clearing hedge roes and planting apple trees for example.

On the upside they have also offered us:

As they consider us as there guests, they would like to help us in the future/ we would be able to use there insurance/ they have lots of parking for our cars/ we can use there public toilet/ and we might be able to use a space in one of there Polly tunnels for propagating our seedlings.

Just wanted to give an up to date acount.

Best wishes David.

Hello!
I dont know how this organic gardening scheme works, but I would be really really interested in taking part! I am unemployed, and would love to develop my skills of growing organic vegetables! The only problem is I live in the middle of Cork city, so travelling to Eniskeen might be difficult. Are there others who live in the city who could help drive there - I would obviously share the petrol costs. Yay! I feel excited already at the thought of it all! Thanks, Amanda xx

Hi Amanda, sadly so far there is no one going from Cork.
We have other Greenfriends project coordinators, that might take part and they live in Cork, so I will ask them.
Otherwise the only thing I can think of is that you find someone with the same interest in gardening, which can join in and you guys could drive down.
I will also start putting flyers in Cork, maybe there are some who are interested.
There seems to be no one against helping out at the Hollies for two days a year in exchange for us being able to use there land. So We will go ahead and start as soon as the 6 of Feb.
It will be great to see you there and best of luck.
Best wishes David

Hi All,
so today (6thFeb.) was a great day out at the community Garden (with such nice weather). We limed the 3rd of an acre and had a general look at the site. The next one is on Sunday the 21st of Feb. and we will start making compost for the day, this in preparation for next autumn. I have also started of some leek and cauliflower seedlings and tomorrow will do other ones as well, for planting out end of March.
Also there are quite a few who would need lifts from Bantry, so if any one can offer lifts. One lady is in need of a lift from Cork as well.
Best wishes David.
