A great idea - I will be joining this outing, and it would be great if people decided to remain as a group that would note likely spots around town, and then get together to do some planting.
Also, as a member of Turners Cross Growers, we are aware that the staff in St. Finbarr's Hospital are interested in growing their own within the grounds of the hospital.
There are also a lot of interesting plots along the Kinsale Road, some workplaces, where workers might like to have their own herbs, veg and fruit.
Also, the start of the river walk near Harvey Normans is a place where there are planting spots - in fact, various parts of this walk - maybe some willow.
Margaret.

Hi Eva, thought I'd already posted this but can't find it so again.
Be happy to talk at it and take part in some way. Maybe we could use the workshop for forming a group that could work away afterwards and into the future, holding that intention might be a good way of building up steam for yr event.
Yeah so keep in touch about it. perhaps there's a few others into joining in on the organising in this group. Give us a shout when you're around.

Yeah John i think youre right, this workshop could be the start of some more dedicated and long term guerrilla gardening in cork. I have been thinking oh we have to make a really colourful effective splash but, perhaps doing the groundwork is more important.
I think its important to do one thing hands-on with the group ( I do not know how many will be in the group, it will be Art Trail that are advertising and taking bookings) so i think i will make Seed Bombs with the group- its good isnt it, the group will feel like theyre making an impact straight away, and we can throw them into other spaces along the way or into our chosen spot.

All those plants , trees and cuttings youve listed would be great. And i know that place near the kinsale rd. It could be a very interesting plot, being next to the Elysian....
If you'd be up for it, perhaps you would consider giving a small talk as part of the workshop John? Youre so knowledgeable in this area, it would really boost the workshop's appeal i think . No worries if you'd rather just garden!

Cool
I'll work on getting some basic tools, and I will come into Cork soon to check out plots. I'll let you know also how the workshop is looking, and let me know if you'd like to give a small talk re: your ideas/about GGardening

Thanks! Eva

Cool.
Cos of the time of year it might be hard to get an immediate visual impact in the way of flowers and that so w'd kind of be laying the groundwork for something to come forth in the spring. Effective guerrilla gardening is a long term project rather than a one off splash.
.
It would be good if this event could feed into a larger process. There's been some actions around the city centre that have only lasted a short time but theres is definetely good community interest in the Turner's cross area so it's getting the balance between doing something really visible and in yr face or something more subtle over a longer time.

S. Douglas road site is still a fair walk from the SC, think the Doug rd might be closer but both at least 15-20 min walk. How many are you expecting to work with? If group is not too big you can do observation, plant ID and awareness exercises on the walk but perhaps somewehere closer to the Sculpture place might be easier. There's a smallish space next to that plant and tool place at the start of the Kinsale road. Right across from the elysian and at a busy intersection.

It would be interesting to see how long those containers you suggest would last. If we go for that we'd want to think about the point we were trying to make and how to bring it across..
I'd hate to do anything that would give any legitimacy to what property developers are doing around the city and they do like to co-opt cultural creativity and pretend they own us. Ideally I'd like to show the way that these guys take over our space and make everyone think they're the only game in town and point out a path towards a more empowered future.

On the other hand we could do something more under the radar and work on growing the root and mycelium networks that we need but with one eye on the above
Anyway plants.
Lots of trees, alder hazel willows rooted and cuttings, raspberry roots
Some bulbs, various wild seeds sT John's Wort, yarrow, .... (Seed bombs), some herbs, calendula, mint, veg seedlings etc etc. Could show people how to gather seeds from the wild.
Anyway. Stream of consciousness. There you go.

Nice one Eva!
As for clay Claire, the old red sandstone sub soil justoutside the city to north and south seems to dry to a fairly nice hard consistency. It's getting down to it can be hard, perhaps find a building site where the digging has already been done (plenty of half-finished ones now the tiger is dead). I've never actually made seed bombs myself. I like to go round in late summer with big paper bags looking for dry seed heads which I shake into the bag. You can get a lot in a short time this way. Later on I look for areas where the soil has been exposed (perhaps the same half-finished building site you got the clay from) and scatter the seeds to the four winds. Come back some months later and observe
